Willard E. Bryant, Jr., a 1978 ECU graduate, was a two-sport standout for the
Pirates. The Glassboro, N.J., native played football and also competed for ECU's
wrestling program.
Bryant won two Southern Conference titles as a heavyweight under former coach and
ECU Hall of Famer, John Welborn. In 1973, Bryant was the N.C. Collegiate champion
and he won his conference titles in 1974 and 1975.
On the football field, Bryant, was an All-Southern Conference defensive tackle. In
1974, he recorded 47 tackles and in 1975, Bryant also had 47 stops with one fumble
recovery and three tackles for a loss. That year, he was named All-Southern
Conference for his defensive efforts.
Bryant is also a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of
Fame for Wrestling.
